“It is not difficult to understand why journalists writing for The New York Times and The New York Review of Books were so effusive about [Stephen Jay] Gould, while scientists were so critical. Journalists have the same liberal-left beliefs as Gould. When they read him, they read what they wanted to hear, and they did not have the knowledge or integrity to question what he wrote. As for Gould himself, he must have known he was deliberately misrepresenting the evidence to suit his political agenda — and it was he who said scientists who do this deserve to spend the afterlife in the bottom circle of the Inferno.”

Boards of Canada actually broke up in 2006. Right after Trans Canada Highway, both Marcus and Mike Sandison had to raise their own families in rural Scotland. The 2013 release of Tomorrow’s Harvest was already considered a comeback irony album of sorts. There were previous experimental “listening parties” in New York for Geogaddi and The Campfire Headphase, but these were mere market trials to see if anyone would buy the CDs. But it was the Tomorrow’s Harvest release campaign that was over the top. It was a concept about the end of the world, or the soundtrack to a John Carpenter film that doesn’t exist. The album was a direct parody of “April Orchestra Vol. 40.”2

That happened 13 years ago. Everyone agreed that somewhere between 2007 and 2015, Boards of Canada was officially over. I certainly did. What influence do they have now from that gap of missing time? The feeling is like a neglectful dad that comes back to see his child enter university and wants to finally reconnect. Resent, or denial from the child, is definitely in the air.

Now, here’s the real problem: What happens when you make a “new” comeback album based upon a previous comeback album and forget about what happened when guitars were introduced during The Campfire Headphase, twenty years ago!? You get a product, which was made not for a new generation of listeners, but deliberately giving in to the demands of perverted fanfiction and the stereotype of what consumers think Boards of Canada is.

To make a long story short, I am greatly disappointed with this unoriginal release called “Inferno.” Why is it such a joykill?

Every Boards of Canada album was different. I remember in 2004 buying Geogaddi on CD from Tower Records because I heard it while watching Weebl and Bob and Salad Fingers on the family computer. And when The Campfire Headphase came out, with that minimal Flash website and 30-second audio clips from Amazon.com, I thought it would be even scarier and bombastic! I remember an entire shelf of Campfire CDs at the Best Buy in Trooper, Pennsylvania. Yes, an array of CDs lined up so you would buy the new album that October on the outskirts of Pennsylvania!

But I was also disappointed with that album twenty years ago. Something has changed.

What was it? Did they get full of themselves? Was it the introduction of guitars? I just felt like something was off.

In an interview with Pitchfork,3 Mike Sandison argued,

“We knew that we had to break away from this thing. It bothered us that if you go into the big stores our stuff is always sitting in the dance music section. We never made a dance record in our entire career but our stuff still gets thrown in there. Our drive with this record [The Campfire Headphase] is to try and get us out of the dance section and into the main section with all the others bands, like ABBA and A-Ha. We’re just a band. Not an IDM band, not an electronic band, and not a dance band.”

And that was it.

They became pretentious. They were embarrassed that they were making “electronic music,” and they wanted the same respect as My Bloody Valentine or Cocteau Twins. They wanted to become the acts outside the obvious medium and subculture of electronic music. So how were they gonna ignore this reality?

A similar story arises with the French duo Daft Punk. They really only had two good albums and two bad albums. After Humans After All (also in 2005), they spent most of their time boosting their brand image and producing little to no music. Why? Because it’s all about propaganda if you can’t make a good record anymore.

Boards of Canada has unfortunately become this kind of golden-calf brand name starting around 2010. Now we have this “new” thing, 16 years later, from the same hype machine of nothing. Right smackdab on the Wikipedia page for the album, we see the word “hauntology” as a selling point. Is that really it? Are we supposed to think this is the spiritual successor to Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti?

Nobody celebrated Boards of Canada because of “hauntology.” That’s the crude part. We have to remember what they were in the 90s and early 2000s. They were trip-hop and beat-driven. They were experimental and innovative. They were industrial and harsh. Those terms have been thrown out the window because it doesn’t sell to English Gen-Xers who are now acting like their Boomer parents.

Is there anything good about this album?

This “millennial macabre” fallacy of scary childhood memories has gone too far. The brothers gave in to the formula, and instead of making an original work, they just copied what people thought Boards of Canada was.

Just look at the back of the album and read the song titles if you would like to know the entire content.

The track titles are clearly derivative and read from a scripted notepad. The words are jumbled up in a medley like something later Talk Talk would produce (like “Myrrhman” or “Runeii”). The titles comes off as a plug-and-play syllabus that reads like it was created by AI. Also, the naming convention always speaks in the first, second, or third person and always follows two to six words each.

Here are some examples of this repetitiveness found on older albums that have been mutated into something else:

• Aquarius is now “Age Of Capricorn.”

• Kid for Today is now “Father and Son.”

• In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country is now “Somewhere Right Now In The Future.”

• Magic Window is now “Acts of Magic.”

• In The Annexe is now “Blood In The Labyrinth.”

• Sick Times is now “Deep Time.”

• From One Source All Things Depend is now “All Reasons Depart.”

• You Could Feel The Sky is now “You Retreat In Time And Space.”

• I Saw Drones is now “I Saw Through Platonia.”

It’s a regurgitation of the small playful hints of hip-hop consciousness, painted into a concept album about an Aum Shinrikyo step-by-step cult initiation.

Even worse is that each new track sounds exactly like the last one from the previous albums.

I’ll go over each track.

Starting the album, “Introit” is the worst Boards of Canada intro (even as a generic song) I've ever heard. It’s an obvious Roland SH-101 arp sequence that mocks the computer intro start-up noise on Tomorrow’s Harvest and is far away from the stimulating “Wildlife Analysis,” “Ready Lets Go,” and “Into The Rainbow Vein,” which these three tracks sound nothing like. In addition, Introit is way too short at 35 seconds, coming close to “I Saw Drones” (from Geogaddi) at 27 seconds. Introit is just annoying and cringe, like forcefully trying to appreciate the Rankin Bass ending bumper. This one was made for the Reddit fans.

“Prophecy At 1420 MHz” was intentionally made as an epic opener. The kind of thrill of watching a brand-new movie trailer and getting excited about what’s to come. But that’s it. It could have been made by Trent Reznor for any Disney movie, and no one would blink an eye. I could see this jingle being used in a future Hyundai car commercial. But I would never play this track in a club setting. It echoes the same surf rock intention of Dayvan Cowboy, but also shames itself further that “Boards of Canada is a rock band!” Within 24 hours, YouTube comments are filled with lyric fandom of “I am god,” which makes me feel queazy about these kinds of insecure fans. I would feel much better if this song were done by the Blue Men Group.

“Hydrogen Helium Lithium Leviathan” is not “Everything You Do Is a Balloon.” The obnoxious drone chord that comes in and doesn’t stop till the 70-second mark. The backmasking feels pushed for no apparent reason (rather, it just sits there to be pretty). The digital audio workstation Reason has an instrument called the Complex-1 Modular Synthesizer, and its first preset is called “Canada” which sounds exactly like this drone. The band’s name is a product and a sound that synthesizer salesmen sell back to you. “It’s a Boards of Canada™ sound you are after!” I’m sure they got this preset and just made a song from it.

“Age Of Capricorn” goes right back into the horoscope motif that was already done. The intro harks back to “Constants are Changing” or “Macquarie Ridge” with its laidback pondering. It might as well be a clap-and-stomp version of “Olson.” The problem is that the album’s mood has changed from an upbeat action movie to a thought-provoking Adam Curtis documentary or Spike Jonze film. The chanting becomes irritating to a point where I wouldn’t be surprised to hear this in the previously mentioned Hyundai car commercial (even if it was directed by David Lynch to try to make the blandness into fine art). It’s like the brothers watched The Wicker Man and decided that was an art direction and subculture to define their music.

“Father and Son” is a new variation of “Telephasic Workshop” or “Julie and Candy.” It’s a turntablist throwback that harkens to DJ Shadow breakdancing. KMFDM’s “Death and Burial of C.R.” also comes to mind. Groovy, but it’s the same old style. I guess this song is about “the family?” (The “cult” kind or “Let me guess how bad your family is!”) It’s a good Autechre jig, but It’s also a bad sign to end Side A abruptly like this.

Turning the record over to the other side, “Somewhere Right Now In The Future” reeks of the “lost futures” nonsense. The “hypnogogic” pop of Neon Indian or Washed Out is a bad comparison. It’s just boring. This isn’t the intro to Stranger Things. If you know you could do the same thing with a guitar in your bedroom, then the track becomes disenchanted.

“Naraka” is another “Alpha and Omega” clone. I have a strong feeling they again reused their twenty-year-old gear and have the same vintage presets they made. If anything is “new,” it’s likely a cool VST3 they just purchased to test something out. I thought this was by Art of Noise, until I heard the ugly lead synth. It’s not just an ugly lead synth; “it’s a Boards of Canada™ synth!” And it’s the worst part of the track.

“Acts of Magic” is bland noise. The most boring track the band has ever released. Boards of Canada is telling me that they are “Merzbow for normies.” A girl in high school just learned about Boards of Canada and wants to sound cool next time in front of her friends and further explains that this track is really “deep and psychedelic.”

“Memory Death” is a telltale sign they are speaking to the millennials obsessed with vaporwave. “It’s about memories!” Well, this entire track is like being on the deathbed. The heart monitor doesn’t make the track any better. Its lack of creativity ends with a C-note bass guitar. I am just imagining this is the stage in the cult ritual where the member loses everything in the past and reinvents himself anew. I just had to make up a story to provide meaning to a video game soundtrack that doesn’t exist, but I am sure a Trans person will be influenced by it. (I would rather be listening to David Bowie’s Low at this point). Soundtracks today seem to be more expressive than meaningful.

“The Word Becomes Flesh” is another Telephasic Workshop. There are only two songs you can breakdance to on this album, and this is the last one. It’s not as scary as “The Devil Is in the Details.” It’s upbeat and like Kraftwerk or Daft Punk. You have to freak out your body to each word said. But the fidelity is way too clean to over the lo-fi crunch to dance (It’s the new VSTs, isn’t it?).

And right on the same release date of the album, the Backrooms movie showcases this track in the film. It makes over 80 million dollars, and the brothers do nothing to get those royalties. More exposure, more branding. This is all orchestrated on purpose.

Side B is over, and it shows you that the record ends both sides with these subliminal dance raps.

Starting the second record, “Into The Magic Land” sounds like a bad Russian cover of “Sixtyniner.” I won’t be surprised if this is the next single. It has that vibe (and smell) of a brown kid with a nose ring that plays guitars and collects designer pedals only to make “drone” and “soundscapes” out of them. It’s a self-guilt track that the band isn’t Clan of Xymox or Handful of Snowdrops. It puts the guitar forward and downplays everything else. It just doesn’t belong anywhere on the album.

There is a good reason why they didn’t move past The Campfire Headphase. It’s like how Depeche Mode made Exciter, and everyone trashed it, only then to make a good throwback like Playing the Angel, and return to Exciter with the equally bad Sounds of the Universe. This is coming back to Campfire, and sound regresses further into the Scottish rock of The Sexual Objects.

“Blood in The Labyrinth” is too polished and belongs in a shopping mall as muzak. It’s the “Dayvan Cowboy” kind of optimism for people who miss browsing Flash games on their Windows XP computer. We are back at the Campfire, or at least they are trying way too hard to be Massive Attack or The Orb.

“Deep Time” is a lazy “Sherbet Head.” Perhaps the worst Boards of Canada song ever released. Why? So many listeners called it “Tape 5” when the promo video was released to advertise the album. People cared more about Boards of Canada returning than they did about the content of what was being listened to. I want to believe that the United States government is connected with the band and knew they were going to make them successful. But the real concerning issue is that someone in the White House actually thinks this is a good song! All that over a synth pad and harp? There is nothing in the Matryoshka doll when you get to it. The elite want you to like bad music on purpose.

“All Reasons Depart” doesn’t know what it is. It’s a Roger Waters speech in the beginning, and then a funky Eurorack jam akin to “Palace Posy” later. Just end Side C already. Minimal techno like this is just filler.

For the final side, “Arena Americanada” is cheery at the wrong time. The snare is compressed, the lead is only three notes, the bass guitar budges too much in the front, and the voice stab is played out. They say you begin a record with the possibility of it being a single. Go “loud” at the start. But for what purpose now, when the album is almost over?

“The Process” must be about Process Church of the Final Judgement. The noise collage sounds way too wild, like “Gemini,” and goes into another two-in-one song structure, and the latter part morphs into “Tears From The Compound Eye.” A novelty track with two different schizophrenic emotions. Perhaps the real closer on the album.

“You Retreat In Time And Space” is bad muzak you would hear on a Kitarō meditation tape. It’s not “Open The Light.” It’s not even the intro to The Phantom Tollbooth. It doesn’t know what it is. It’s “Aquarius” without saying “orange!” The bass guitar makes it feel like it’s Acid Jazz (the Medeski Martin & Wood kind), then thinking they are going to have a special on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts. This is a single without saying it is.

“I Saw Through Platonia” borrowed its heartbeat from Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon. The heartbeat, like the heart monitor on Memory Death, is too much. More new age without context. More “One Very Important Thought” without being important. All of it is a bad repeat episode. The same gimmicks from 1998 all over again. Noise at the end of the tunnel. Inferno is what The Force Awakens is to Star Wars.

The only thing “new” about the release is the original art by the brothers featured in the album’s interior and booklet. While the art is stunning, it feels out of place with the music and the design. It’s like if they got the booklet template from Tomorrow’s Harvest and then re-uploaded new art pieces that they made to replace it. The obvious Christian cross and haunted children honestly feel boring at this point. Peter Sotos knows how to write and visualize such trauma, while the brothers feel that it is now an obligation (and for the fans) to feature such cliches in their work. This is the annoying aspect of the millennial macabre attitude. It assumes anything in the past was gloomy and scary by nostalgia, something “hidden” by euphemisms. There is no trust in the past. It’s extremely doubtful what is good and sincere in favor of the idea that all of tradition should be discarded as reactionary.

The album art suffers from the band’s name being plastered over the fresh image. It’s to make sure non-English speakers know they are buying an album by “BOARDS OF CANADA.” I can’t even see if there is actual album art other than children, which I guess is like the first album. The lowercase track listing on the back isn’t helping either.

The photography is similar to what Placebo was doing on “Without You, I’m Nothing.” So, no, the album art isn’t that innovative in the history of existing physical albums.

This product made me contemplate a greater thought. Why does everyone who signed on to Warp Records think they are indie musicians doing experiments with their guitars like they are Nick Drake? What’s with the Tycho car jingles? Why does Boards of Canada think they can cut into the Beach House consumer market? Why is the press photo another white person who does interesting things and who is just like you, living in Bushwick or West Philly? The target demographic is guys with mustaches and nose rings who buy lots of designer pedals to be “expressive,” but get really embarrassed if you call their sound “techno.”

Squarepusher’s “Detroit People Mover” is about a society without humans; a type of nonhuman future where Timothy Morton’s ideas of post-human, anti-anthropocene nihilism reign supreme. Where technology adapts to human behavior, electronic music does not exist because it’s a simple expression in a complex world. Squarepusher is a novelty jazz musician who just happens to use a drum machine, and should be judged like Miles Davis writing music for a traditional-futuristic Japan. Why? Because Americans —liberalism and capitalism— brought so much good to the Asian world, and they are just like us. (…I am being sarcastic here.)

Look at Squarepusher’s new album released this year, “Kammerkonzert.” Design-wise, it looks like an old Jazz record with the track titles on the front of the release! (I only know of the band Health who has done this, ironically mixed with power electronic aesthetics.) The record label, label address, the barcode, and even the production credits of the album are on the front! What kind of faux-authenticity is this in 2026? It is telling me nobody treats the material form with respect anymore because everything is free online. What are the chances I am going to find this album in a record bin in 2046 and buy it for $5 because of the information on the front? This assumes there are too many albums produced for the average consumer, and hence, inflation is bound to happen in the art industry.

And the distorted Neue Haas Grotesk font is not persuading me that this is a Herbie Mann or generic City pop record.

And so why am I comparing Kammerkonzert to Inferno? It’s because both are on the same label, released this year with the same target audience in mind. What does it tell you about the fans who consume these products?

Boards of Canada is trying really hard to be a joke of The Incredibles String Band or Strawberry Alarm Clock. Every album they released felt different, but not (Disco) Inferno. Craig Laubach of Acid Horizon will pick and choose his favorite things and why his favorite band could do no wrong, because it reinforces his favorite thoughts. At this point, there is nothing left, and we have to admit that Inferno isn’t their best. It’s the cost of trying to find nothing to get a book deal on Repeater.

The only thing the brothers can do to redeem themselves is to go on tour and create a new community around concert-going. The whole secret Freemason mystery is no longer trendy. Blank Banshee is still hiding behind a mask, and after a decade, it’s not making the music any better.

Aphex Twin has a synth; Richie Hawtin has a drum machine, so where is Boards of Canada’s guitar pedal?

It would also be in their best interest to release another album in three years. The stagnation harms their output. That’s why they need to market their name so much to make up for lost time. I wouldn’t be surprised if Inferno was recorded in 2015 and then released a decade later out of boredom to get another paycheck.

The golden rule is that aesthetics alone can’t define the music or sound. But here we are with another fad product to make you relive the same nostalgia of an already ironic product that was released more than a decade ago, with a zeitgeist that is getting older and bitter about society.

I predicted this outcome about nine years ago in a tweet on October 30th, 2017:

“boards of canada is extremely overrated... but geogaddi is a scary folk horror album par excellance.”

Inferno isn’t a Geogaddi. The band just gave up on originality after 2006.

That’s it. Please, don’t defend this album.

Today’s “book reviews” are nothing more than object reviews. I stand by that thesis, and will judge a book by its cover and design. If there is actual “content” in the text, likely it’s above expression.

“Alt-lit?” Well, what could have been is now in the present.

Technology has become the ultimate ventriloquist, puppeteering music into forms that pretend to be older than they are, or kitsch art that winks while it weeps. A synth pad hums with the warm imperfection of analog tape, yet it is rendered in a pristine Ableton Live environment on an expensive laptop. This is not deception; it is the new sincerity, born out of irony. The memory is flawed on purpose. So technology has made the past portable.

And how do we write new novels in 2026? We write them on a laptop that mimics the past.

“Kitsch” used to be a trend. Now an AI can generate a Bach chorale in the style of a 1970s lounge singer in seconds, then distort it through a “broken cassette” filter. It’s so advanced on this meta level that we forget any of this innovation is made in the present.

Technology does not resolve the triangle of irony, sincerity, and kitsch; it triangulates them into a perfect, unstable shape. Music pretending to be old reminds us that the past was never pure. Kitsch art, mass-produced and self-aware, confesses feelings that are often embarrassing.

And yet we go forward. Whatever “alt-lit” is, it adapts and assumes it can’t be influenced by the political environment we are in. It’s a fake type of “apolitical” ethic or “liberal” nature that denies its own existence.

Sometimes, however, the text does become aware of this conflict.

Daniel Gavilovski’s Carbon Pages presents a clean, deliberately literary design that feels both timeless and intentionally archival. The layout is classic Steampunk typography: generous white space, elegant serif body text (likely Garamond or similar), and stage directions set in italics or smaller type. Page numbers appear at the foot, headers are minimal, and the overall rhythm mimics mid-20th-century drama editions (think Grove Press or Faber & Faber scripts). It is book fetishism. And this book fetishism is what an “object review” is about.

The design is restrained yet atmospheric. The title page is stark and centered; the dedication and preface pages use simple, centered blocks. The cover page presents a moon-faced cartoon with stars and a bottom page owl colophon. The interior features Ralph Steadman-esque drawings that are raw, expressionistic, and grotesque. Distorted figures, dripping lines, horror-comedy energy that perfectly matches the Grand Guignol inspiration of “COGNITOHAZARD.” And what does that mean? It is a type of “dangerous memory.”

The thin margins, formal typography, and samizdat-inspired title consciously nod to Soviet-era carbon copies and pre-war theatrical chapbooks. It rejects modern minimalist sans-serif minimalism in favor of a tactile, “bookish” feel. Even the 2026 copyright and clean PDF rendering cannot hide the retro sensibility.

And yet all of it IS digital!

The cover page Moon Stamp instantly recalls the eccentric, hand-stamped envelopes of Kent Peterson’s mail art, while the Unreal Press logo at the bottom—an unmistakable wide-eyed owl—winks with the same sly, nocturnal mischief. And the title, “Carbon Pages,” deliberately summons the fragile, translucent sheets of Soviet-era samizdat. And yet we order it through Kindle Direct Publishing, and the Amazon megacorporation creates these pages for us. Technology is the art.

This three-piece collection drifts between cosmopolitanism and a strangely optimistic existentialism, even as the longest piece, “No Weapon Formed Against You,” asks whether the “new machine” that replaced the USSR is any different from the old one. It is a sprawling, non-linear epic drama that spans roughly from 1980 to the early 2000s, mostly in Russia. It follows three “political maximalists.” Igor Letov (a punk musician and dissident), Eduard Limonov (a volatile exiled writer), and Alexander Dugin (a mystical philosopher)—as they bond in youthful rebellion, forge a radical movement during the USSR’s collapse, seize fleeting power, and ultimately confront aging, betrayal, and the banality of their own success. The title alludes to Isaiah 54:17 (“No weapon formed against you shall prosper”), but here it drips with irony: the characters weaponize ideology only for it to turn inward, corroding their friendships and dreams.

The play opens in 1980 with two parallel scenes that establish the protagonists’ defiant energies. In Moscow, teenage Igor Letov is dragged before a KGB officer (the “Blue Suit”) for smuggling Western 8-track tapes. He urinates in defiance during interrogation and is committed to a psychiatric hospital, where he meets the shaven-headed Alexander Dugin. The boys bond over forbidden music; Igor plucks a violin like a guitar and belts out a raw, patriotic ballad about a rising “Motherland.” Meanwhile, in a bohemian Paris apartment, the flamboyant young Eduard Limonov—escorted by the elegant Countess de Lisse—crashes a literary party. He shocks the guests with crude rants against Tolstoy (“a charlatan”), Brodsky (“a sub-rate poet”), and Russian mediocrity, while charming (and horrifying) the hosts with tales of exile, bumming in New York, and anti-Western bravado. These vignettes set the tone: irreverent dialogue, black humor, and a narrator who drifts between poetic asides and stage directions.

The middle sections leap forward through the chaotic 1990s. Letov confronts Limonov over the shoddy printing of his nationalist magazine Limonka. Dugin mediates, and the trio founds the National Bolshevik Party (NazBol), fusing fascist aesthetics, Soviet nostalgia, and anti-liberal fury. They squat in derelict apartments (the “Eagle’s Nest” headquarters overlooking the Moskva River), renovate by hand, debate hypnosis and banned literature around samagon campfires, and launch provocative actions. Scenes brim with absurd camaraderie: Letov’s Siberian tang, Dugin’s esoteric rants about empires from Vladivostok to Gibraltar, Limonov’s explosive charisma. Personal lives bleed in—Limonov’s affairs (including with Malina), jealousies, Parisian flashbacks, and Letov’s rock-star resentment at being sidelined. The play satirizes their bombast: swastikas and Lenin quotes on the walls, grand speeches about a “holy coalition” of Red and Brown, and petty power struggles. A “Seizure” (a stylized coup) elevates a protégé nicknamed “Ledhead” (a stand-in for a real political figure) to power, turning the radicals into uneasy insiders.

Later, Limonov becomes the regime’s revered but sidelined “Poet Father,” confined to the opulent Ak-Greucid dacha-palace—a surreal monument of shooting ranges, labyrinths, scented rooms, and apocalyptic obsessions (he offers fruit bowls to an invented muse). He wheedles for more power in memos and phone calls, rages at mediocrity, and hosts fleeting romances, but age brings frailty: a limp, failing senses, and senile erotica. Letov dies of a heart condition; Dugin retreats into private life, marrying and ritually baptizing his child in Arctic waters. Limonov attends parades in his own honor but feels forgotten. The final scenes mix melancholy and absurdity: he writes furious letters demanding conquest or honorable death; old comrades visit his “palace of entropy”; the narrator reflects on lost youthful evil and the drunken stumble of history.

Thematically, the play is a tragicomic autopsy of radicalism. It asks what happens when maximalist dreams (anti-Soviet rebellion, post-collapse nationalism) collide with reality: ideology devours friendship, power co-opts the revolutionaries, and personal pettiness undermines grand visions. Gavilovski blends real historical figures and events with fictional flair—crude banter, philosophical tangents, surreal jumps, and poetic narration—for a sweeping critique of Russia’s cycles of hope and mediocrity. The three men’s bond is the heart: loyal yet jealous, inspiring yet corrosive. No one is heroic; everyone is absurd, human, and ultimately diminished.

This is a raucous, dialogue-driven epic about three friends who tried to remake Russia and instead watched their weapons turn inward. It’s the collection’s emotional and political centerpiece—funny, furious, and elegiac.

The collection could be read as linear fiction, but it also becomes a comic without the cartoons, and we just have the speech bubbles. The text feels enlarged. Words and actions float like the works of Wyndham Lewis or William Carlos Williams. The visual flowers break on pages 77, 84, 92, 111, 117, 125, 126, and so on. It’s many cartoon influences in one. It has many tropes of gag characters, from Alexander Dugin to Eduard Limonov. I’m not so sure if this is Six Characters in Search of an Author by Luigi Pirandello or I Wished by Dennis Cooper. I don’t know if the art references Quentin Blake, James O’Barr, or Brendan McCarthy. It’s a potpourri filled with the class distinction of knowing these things.

The “novel” becomes a novelty in itself. It is a “book” as an object. It looks like something that was made in the 1940s. It has the legitimacy of any other novel and is to be accepted in the line of existing novels found in the Library of Congress. It is getting easier and easier to design, compose, and form a “novel.”

In the age of flawless digital screens and infinite scrolling, the physical book has undergone a curious resurrection. Walk into any bookstore today—whether a gleaming chain or an independent boutique—and you’ll notice the same phenomenon: row upon row of “new” books engineered to look centuries old. Faux-leather spines with embossed gold lettering, deckled edges that mimic the rough cut of hand-pressed paper, distressed cloth covers artfully faded at the corners, even simulated foxing and water stains applied by machine. These are not reprints of Victorian first editions. They are 2026 novels, self-help manuals, and celebrity memoirs dressed in the costume of antiquity. Publishers have perfected the art of manufactured nostalgia, selling the romance of a leather-bound library without the inconvenience of actual age.

This aesthetic sleight of hand serves a larger cultural shift. People are no longer buying books primarily to read them. They are collecting artifacts. It’s props for a lifestyle performance. Vast walls of uniformly aged-looking volumes frame influencers’ faces, arranged by color gradient or thematic palette rather than alphabetical order or subject. The spines face outward, not to invite curiosity but to telegraph taste. A visitor to such a room might admire the “vintage” aesthetic, never suspecting that many of the books remain pristine inside their shrink-wrap, untouched since the day they arrived from Amazon.

The transformation is subtle yet profound. The object has become the art. Buyers speak openly about “shelf styling” and “book hauls” as interior-design decisions. A matte-black edition of Pride and Prejudice with gilded edges sells not because Austen’s prose suddenly feels urgent, but because it photographs beautifully beside a marble bust and a velvet chaise. The text inside has become almost incidental, like the blank pages of a high-end notebook marketed as a “journal.”

This is not mere decoration; it is a quiet surrender. Reading demands time, attention, and discomfort. It is the willingness to be changed by another mind. Collecting vintage-style books requires only disposable income and an eye for composition. The result is a curious inversion: the more books look like rare artifacts, the less they function as books.

We have entered a new era of “Carbon Pages.” This artifact represents that new phase we are embracing.

The Arts Council of Princeton is supposed to be presenting Porchfest 2026 this weekend.

HOWEVER. DUE TO WEATHER AND LACK OF AUDIENCE, THE EVENT WILL BE CANCELLED THIS WEEKEND.

There will be no DJ mix this weekend because of this cancellation.

In the meantime, I will be taking a sabbatical in order to figure out the next semester of action.

As much as I love WPRB, I can’t forgive the absurdity of this non-profit laziness in action.

There are better DJs, acts, and artists that don’t get platformed on WPRB and continue to be shadow-banned because of FCC regulations and tardy rich kids with power-trip issues.

WPRB will always have my commitment and advocacy. Just ignore some of these bourgeois toadies who falter with “the arts” anyway.

For the sake of authenticity, I was born in Philadelphia, and I currently live in San Francisco.

I am not a fan of LinkedIn or any personal curriculum vitae website that whores the individual as an employee for capitalism. The words I write here on this digital space are an act of personal intimacy between us and for your own intellectual development.

My internet career as “pilleater” began on April 5th, 2009, on YTMND.com, where I spammed an art movement about Mr. Krabs. On any picture I could find through Google search, I traced out the head of Mr. Krabs, pasted his head on the found (and downloaded) digital image, and added a shrilling sample of screaming (“Oh Yeah I’m Krabs, Ahhhhh!!!”), creating a new and deformed anti-meme. My video art on YTMND could be described as something out of Arngren.net.

The name “pilleater” is a joke on the username “inkdrinker,” and predates any “red pilled” or reactionary thought or reference around The Matrix.

I have created and advocated other internet niche ideologies in the tradition of YTMND meme-making, which includes “the AxA movement,” queer culture, post-neofolk, “Mr. Krabs,” “Safe Sleazy,” “avant-garde hate,” and anime-realism.

Other lowbrow and obscure topics include accelerationism, “hyperobjects,” electronic music, Lacanian sexual desires, George Miles, dark ecology, Asian feminism, “ethical sadism,” interracial Platonism, anti-liberalism, and Atari Teenage Riot’s Digital Hardcore movement.

My interests can best be described as a hybrid between the “Asian” (or “The Other“) and the analytical. I believe what is “Asian” is ultimately an expression of paganism against the state. The film “In The Mood For Love” is an anti-liberal art piece that will soon overtake the modern world.

I’m also inspired by Adam Parfrey’s principles on “Aesthetic Terrorism,” whom I was able to talk to before he died. His sister Juliet Parfrey called me a “robot.”

During this meme-making time, I was an Asian Studies undergraduate in college. But then, out of my eccentric research, I decided to write my Bachelor’s dissertation on the rise of the alternative right in 2016, before Donald Trump was elected as president. Later, I went to graduate school, and I majored in capital D “Design,” which I now hold an MA in. My Master’s was about “elegance” in board game design, and how design will become liberated once we create interactivity around living people and through our political imagination. The point was to take the ethos and aesthetic of Jeff Minter and apply it against a game design world that has gone against the beauty of expression. My argument was later revised in later works by popular professionals, such as in Miguel Sicart’s Playing Software: Homo Ludens in Computational Culture, and in Adrian Hon’s You’ve Been Played: How Corporations, Governments, and Schools Use Games to Control Us All.

I also hold a TEFL certification and have taught English abroad.

No, I don’t have a GitHub page because I am not some pretentious rich kid role-playing as an esoteric Haskell/Max 9 programmer in Bushwick with an Asian girlfriend and a Slack-Zoom-socialist “job.” I am not a NTS or Mixcloud DJ either because those platforms are for white-collar chumps.

The liberal arts are underappreciated today because of their association with lazy people who would rather become managerial slaves for the American “Empire” (referring to Antonio Negri’s concept of it). Pedigrees thus become social symbols to gain access to job security in the white-collar circle. However, I reject this tradition and represent my intellectual value against the state, which tries to use me as an expendable “skill” for its economic downfall.

I’m also obsessed with board game design and often will rant about my board game collection. Every week, I am attending board game night with normies, soyjaks, or queers. And I have written over 198 reviews about board games I played, relating to the school of “Ludism.”

We are resurrecting Kraftwerk, krautrock, Berlin school, EBM, synthpop, and Germanic Industrial music against the Anglo obsession of Throbbing Gristle and Whitehouse.

Aesthetically, I love collecting lava lamps, kaleidoscopes, Rubik’s cubes, Polaroid pictures, artsy board games, “Ice Pyramids,” different editions of Cosmic Encounter or Cosmic Wimpout, modular synthesizers, drum machines, Stereograms, Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, Non-sports trading cards, vintage rave posters, vintage pornography (both straight and gay), vintage manga, trading card games, Atari 2600 cartridges, science-fiction pulps, interesting vinyl records and cassette tapes that play one side of exotic music for around 22 minutes, vintage comic books, manga, “vinyl toys,” VHS tapes, Hindu things, Hanna-Barbera art, Super 8 camera footage, Black Mountain College memorbilla, Dayglo art, and pretty much all of that kind of stuff that I can put in my room and pretend I’m a radical from the 1960s.

I enjoy the punk-rock ethos, and I’m all about advocating straight-edge agitation, transgressive art, and egoist philosophy. Even if that means sliding into the opponent’s DMs and getting upfront and personal. Idiots need not apply.

I disavow and condemn the attitudes of Lydia Lunch, Jim Goad, Chris Korda, Jello Biafra, and the entire Gen-X New York “punk” idealism of avant-garde hate and the irrational worship of Larry Clark. The only remedy is to enforce straight edge crews and hostility towards this bad paradigm and their related ilk that advocate drugs, prostitution, rape, smoking, drinking, depression, and antinatalism.

For the record, I don’t care if they think I’m a “creep” or a “stalker.” These are make-believe bogeyman tales. I like to embrace the fact that I am “the bad guy” to construct a false reality for the liberal, just like the Gulf War. I am like the Radiohead song. I could also be a Negative Creep. “Hate” is rather used as an agitation device for artistic purposes. I say, embrace the semantic jail and cultural lingo that normies and liberals foist upon the “canceled.” If they think you are a “racist” or have a “fetish,” let them believe in their own fabricated evidence. They live in a semantic reality that stops them from questioning objective reality, which in turn stops the public from pursuing the Socratic concept of “the good life.”

It is absurd that sexual preferences and desires in liberal society are considered irrational, or some lust response out of hunger to eat anything. This is wrong, because desire is rational and articulate, while discrimination requires intellectual demand, and nostalgia needs love.

Straight Edge (sXe) and DIY are about supporting this good life and advocating for ethical people who abstain from toxic culture. It also means taking down macho wignats, pretentious sex identity zealots, arrogant idol worshipers, liberal normies, subcultural plural pronoun robots, and ego trippers who break these rules. Straight edge and DIY are for the innocent against the exploitative. Thus, this project also belongs to “positive hardcore.”

“AxA” is a local variant for a POC community that is against the liberal state and hostile towards those who deny biracialism as an identity. No compromises! It’s also a graffiti thing, too, where the cross is “bombed” along with the martini glass. We are straight edge and against any acts of abuse, sex trafficking, and drug harm. Our goal is to create an Epicurean collective where we respect the arts, our desires, the family, and to push psychogeographical and inclusive happenings. AxA is what comes after the work of Spiral Tribe and the Freetekno movement towards ethical Eurasian praxis.

I don’t create content. This is anti-content, “noise pollution,” or “dark” data. That includes every digital letter I write. My video art belongs to the demoscene, which I also associate with my interest in Amiga computers. In a digital age where the internet is considered edible as junk food, we forget that we are writing important letters to everyone and ourselves. Instead of giving free work to Elon Musk or Mark Zuckerberg, we have the right to own and archive our written letters. Philosophers like Nicolás Gómez Dávila inspire us to capture our quick and witty thoughts at the moment, as Twitter/X is deliberately designed to make us forget anything we ever wrote past 3,000 tweets.

This website serves as a direct dialogue between two people: you and me. I am an anti-capitalist, an anti-liberal, and against modernity. The data here is contagious, and you should save and spread it to others.

We must, as a team, accelerate the revolution with the advancement of dark data.

This acceleration process requires you to produce for yourself. However, I’m not advocating that you should ignore or be isolated from what I write. I’m against libertarianism and the concept of “the non-aggression pact,” as this only puts people into virtual pod homes like in The Matrix. You should read my work and learn from it. I’m here as an ethical and enriching tutor for you, and I’m not some hostile or condescending stooge against the values you cherish.

We are in the traditional canon of Manuel DeLanda’s concept of “critical design.”

Some actual normies and NPCs believe it is unethical for you to tell them what to think or to give them paternal advice and polite redirection. The normie is in a “Pensée unique“ semantic prison. This is imposed by liberalism and capitalism, creating the synthetic left and a mainstream culture around it. When you try to politely redirect and educate the stranger, they break down with a self-hate projection and assume you are the one who is “upset,” because liberalism itself is condescending and evil towards them. Thus, everyone should think the same, as they shut off all human communications, while they “eat the bugs and stay in the pods.” This is downright evil.

The hypocrisy is real and is in front of us. This is what we should be up against.

I argue that you should own the means of production and value self-production without meaning. It’s in total contradiction with the objective reality of “value” itself. An anti-liberal acceleration is required to undo the current philistine behavior and reinstall a better society, putting civilization back on its tracks to human space exploration and beyond, and not through the decadent outcome of the technological singularity prison complex.

Production can only be understood through self-ownership. It’s up to you to understand your place in this sinful world, or about Kulturpessimismus. I want you to focus on desire and see it as a rational force for good.

As a disclaimer, I enjoy the practice, criticism, and technique of intellectual jujutsu.

For example, this includes the work of Alain de Benoist and his concept of “Nouvelle Droite,” as this is an incredible misnomer about his work, and mine. I do not subscribe to a “right-wing” subculture or a “left-wing” one. Even the word “nationalist” is a psychological operation to advocate safe space comfort. I have associations from both sides of the spectrum, and I listen carefully to what they have to write and say and how it can contribute to humanity. De Benoist later admitted that he no longer acknowledges his work as “right-wing,” but rather as a hypothetical and cultural “right” that he has no responsibility for. He is skilled at the game of tangling with the enemy and forcing them into a position to reconsider their liberalism. This is what I am interested in, and I use logic to its Socratic conclusion so that the reader or audience may think and become human again.

Another example of this intellectual jujutsu I like would be the work of Alvin Plantinga. While Plantinga is a Christian, he is able to use analytical philosophy to his liking to stun the enemy and make the disbeliever into a believer. It’s like playing a game of Chess and cornering the opponent with their own moves that can only hurt them in the end. It’s also very similar to François Laruelle’s reactionary and inverted idea of “non-philosophy,” where there is a philosophy against the school of philosophy.

This is intellectual jujutsu, and this is what I practice through my writing.

By declaring oneself “right” or “left,” one limits oneself to a subculture and the language that can’t speak outside the curated semantics. While Norberto Bobbio has argued before that the left and right have now become confident terms of identity politics, this can only be understood as a reaction to late modernity. What matters is the subculture and the traits that are manifested within the colors of red or blue. The interesting aspect is that modernity has allowed the individual to identify with forms outside of reality.

The popularity of deep ecology has only led to the suicidal and stagnant ideology of Social Darwinism, Malthusianism, “philosopher-king” snobbery, antinatalism, and the degrowth movement, which I am all against.

Ideology is an idiot’s Mad Libs game. A fill-in-the-blank, big nothing burger that can’t let the individual speak, because the individual has nothing to say. Intellectual jujutsu breaks their back and forces them to think about their life. That’s why intellectual jujutsu is encouraged at parties, “salons,” or any place hipsters hang out in order to break their reality and invite revolution.

What then do we make of the Ship of Theseus if we can construct preferences and desires back together?

The point of intellectual jujutsu is to envision the future return of paganism. Concepts of Sadism, Alan Watts, and anti-liberalism all mix together to advocate the real thesis behind Asian/Eastern Studies. “Paganism” isn’t an aesthetic collection of black metal and pre-European objects; as that misses the point.

The paganism that I am fighting for is an eclectic mix of pre-Christian ideas and culture against the Western canon, the Greek world, and transhumanism. I am not a reactionary, as I care about dialectics. I want a future pagan society that realizes the inner truths of the world and espouses Discordianism to manifest the virtues of the AxA movement. Paganism demands the synthesis between West and East because both are capable of reinventing paganism against post-modernity. Our taste in beauty, art, music, literature, women, values, and people demand we uphold paganism as the main motivator for world Eurasianism…

How do we describe what we see on the internet?

Is it “art?”

Ytmnd.com is a website of user-created “memes,” and the “demoscene” is about testing the limits of what a computer can do. These are obscure examples. But what do they both have in common?

The YTMND & demoscene philosophy states that art in the digital age has become data, and constitutes three elements, isolated or together.

Internet art is about:

Sound - Music, vibrations in the air, noise, communication, a lecture, etc.

Image - A representation of an external form, visuals, animation, graphics, beauty, etc.

Text - Written or printed work, language, logic, meaning, purpose, knowledge, etc.

And Design - An artistic form expressed exclusively in a non-physical arrangement, plan, function, program, or thought. …Made by humans, for humans.

Of course, the capitalist regime we live under only sees profit within the means of production, and it construes subjective value as a form of profit. The corporations see art as nothing more than “content,” and downplay the chaotic energy of data or production without profit.

The “value” of sound, image, or text should not be synthesized together as “content,” as this agenda destroys the philosophy of art and the need for human expression and intellect without constraints. True value provides nothing for capitalism. Data is free without value, and art on the internet is ever-expanding with the help of technology.

Art is nothing but data on the internet, and through the interpretation of the computer.

An artist can only focus on one area of sound, image, or text. The best art tends to have all three together, or two. I would rank text as the highest form of human art, superior to sound and image, as both require text to strengthen their meaning. Always sound or image alone requires text to create a lasting legacy. With text, we might not hear or see anything at first, but an advanced textual reading will eventually do this for us.

With Design, it’s like a running software where the art is expressed only when the rules are understood and executed by humans, and for humans. The realm of board game design is a great example of this spiritual phenomenon.

The creation of an interface can also be understood through design, but it needs to be anthropocentric, and not between AI, a robot, or a machine, as design is exclusively expressed between humans, and not the auto-self. To put it bluntly, interactivity is between two or more humans, and not with a non-human in any equation. Design is the art of interactivity, and can only benefit human relationships.

Sound, image, and text can all be interconnected through the design of a visual programming language, or object-oriented programming. Programs like Max-MSP-Jitter, Pure Data, AudioMulch, Bidule, Reaktor, Bitwig’s “The Grid,” Blender, GameMaker Studio, Clickteam Fusion, and many other great programs all contribute to a new paradigm of design. “Objects” are placed in the infinite layout, where they are “patched” together with one another. Together, they make up a single container or an entirely new application that is executed to create the demoscene art. Objects can be words, bands, celebrities, mechanics, concepts, and so on. It’s how we connect them together in the “patcher.”

Object-oriented programming will soon replace blogging, music, art, and philosophy as a whole. Eclecticism is the practice of deriving ideas, styles, or tastes from a broad and diverse range of sources. All sources relate to one another and reflect upon the rhizomes that intersect with the sound, image, and text. Design makes this execution possible.

Be it writing a novel, composing electronic music, creating demoscene art, or a new program, objects make up programming, and programming is the main motivation behind computer art. The old world is obsolete.

We should embrace this future transition into object-oriented ontology.

When we put the glasses on, we don’t see mindless zombies in the streets, but all of the art we know, and this internet reality has been constructed in C++ code. Everything on the internet is a derivative of C, and to understand these objects as just lines of C code, we can break from the real Matrix in front of us and create our own using this knowledge of C. I advise you to also learn about C if you want to understand art or want to remix and take what you see.

Programming and logic have become something like a Eurorack. Outlets go into inlets, and those new outlets find new inlets until the chain reaches the end. It’s not only a web, but a coherent line of operation.

All of “meme culture” is open-source warfare. Take, sample, steal, whatever you like. No citation needed!

I now present my favorite categories of sound, image, text, and design. In a way, I am curating my canon of modernity. These are the objects that rule us, and the C that birthed it.

Modernity is like the album art of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Everyone is important, curated to my interest, my canon, against the modern world.

The following curated list can be juxtaposed together to create a personal and new form of modernity. All objects listed here are relatable to the future of anti-liberalism and of real paganism, a new paradigm of the intellectual canon.
